Proposed Fuel Subsidy Strike

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, to shelve its proposed strike scheduled to begin on Wednesday this week over the increase in the pump price of petrol due to the removal of fuel subsidy.

On Sunday, Governor Sanwo-Olu gave the advice during an interview with newsmen after a Thanksgiving service at the Cathedral Church of Christ Marina, Lagos Island.

He said, “It’s not the time for a strike; during the campaign, every one of our Presidential candidates said the first thing they would do is remove the fuel subsidy, so what has changed? What has the President done that differs from what any of the others would have done? So let’s wait and support this man, there’s no need for us to heat up the polity, and there’s no need for us to get political; it’s governance now.”

Emphasising that the proposed industrial action would not solve anything, Governor Sanwo-Olu pointed out that President Bola Tinubu had promised to review the minimum wage and urged Labour Leaders to allow the President to settle in and work with him to ensure a turnaround in the nation’s economy.

Explaining that his administration had already taken steps to review the salary of workers in the State employ, Governor Sanwo-Olu advised other State Governments to also do so.

In a sermon during the service, the Provost of the Cathedral, the Very Reverend Adebola Ojofeitimi, enjoined Nigerians and political leaders to embrace the spirit of unity and selfless service to ensure rapid growth in the Country.

The Thanksgiving service was attended by family and friends of the Governor, the Deputy Governor and his family, former political appointees, and top officials in the Lagos State Civil Service.
