Call for Comment on Suitability of Shortlisted Candidates as Judges

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has issued a call for comments on the suitability of shortlisted candidates for appointment as judges of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. This review process aims to maintain the integrity of the judiciary and ensure that only candidates with the requisite competence, character, and reputation are appointed to the Bench.

Dear Esteemed Members of the Bar and General Public,

Recall that on January 28, 2024, following the request by the Honourable Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) published a Notice calling for expressions of interest from suitably qualified legal practitioners of Bauchi, Bayelsa, Enugu, Imo, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Taraba, and Zamfara States origin, for appointment as Judges of the High Court of the FCT.

The Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), acting as Chairman of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) of the FCT, has forwarded the NBA President the shortlist of candidates for appointment and requested comments on their suitability.

Therefore, members of the bar and the general public are invited to submit petitions, objections, and/or comments on the suitability or otherwise of the shortlisted candidates being considered for appointment as Judges of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.

All comments, petitions, objections, or general observations should be in portable document format (PDF) and forwarded as an attachment to the NBA President via ayodeji.oni@nigerianbar.org.ng or +234 803 345 2825. Please ensure all communications are sent in by the close of business on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.

This exercise aims to foster the NBA’s resolve and commitment to strengthening our judiciary by enthroning a painstaking and transparent process to ensure that only suitably qualified candidates—of appropriate competence, character, and reputation—are appointed to the bench.
