With profound sorrow and a heavy heart, I bid farewell to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, a distinguished leader, former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, and an esteemed figure in our nation’s legal community. Governor Akeredolu passed away on December 27, 2023, after a prolonged battle with illness.

Governor Akeredolu’s contributions to the legal profession and public service are immeasurable. Called to the Bar in 1978, he served the NBA diligently, holding various positions such as Secretary and Vice Chair of the Ibadan Branch, before ascending to the esteemed position of the 24th President of the Association from 2008 to 2010.

Known for his influence and bravery, he remains one of the most impactful leaders in the history of the NBA. The late distinguished Senior Advocate also lent his expertise to the nation in diverse capacities, including Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice from 1997 to 1999. Subsequently, he served two consecutive terms as Governor of Ondo State until his demise.

The legacy of “Aketi,” as he was fondly called, transcends his legal career. Recognizing his remarkable achievements and unwavering commitment to the legal profession and public service, the Nigerian Bar Association — Human Rights Institute (NBA-HRI) building proudly bears his name. This building is a testament to his enduring legacy and reminds him of his invaluable contributions to advancing human rights and the rule of law.

I extend my deepest condolences to Governor Akeredolu’s loved ones, the Ondo State Executive Committee, and the entire people of Ondo State during this trying time. My prayers are with them, and I beseech God Almighty to comfort their hearts and grant them the strength to bear this significant loss. May Governor Akeredolu’s soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy inspire future generations.
