The Utter Bar Condemns Assault on OLUMIDE SONUBI ESQ, Advocates for Improved Police-Lawyers Relationship, and Joins Peaceful Protest for Justice

The Utter Bar of the Ota Branch strongly condemns the recent police assault on OLUMIDE SONUBI, Esq., at Moshalashi Police Station, Ipaja, Lagos, considering it a symbol of the problematic relationship between the police and lawyers in Nigeria.

Despite acknowledging leaders’ efforts like the NBA President Y.C. Maikyau, SAN, in collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association Securities Agencies Relations [SARC], the Utter Bar emphasizes the need for more comprehensive actions by all stakeholders.

Expressing concern about the mistreatment of lawyers in police stations, including the confiscation of mobile phones and restrictions on their contributions to protecting human rights, the Utter Bar calls for a change in attitudes to uphold the Rule of Law and strengthen democracy.

The Utter Bar, led by A.O. Adegoke Aciarb, announces its participation in the peaceful protest organized by the Lagos Bar in conjunction with NBA SARC and advocates for broader discussions on the issue during its January meeting.

The Utter Bar urges the Inspector General of Police to issue policy directives to enhance and promote a positive relationship between the police and lawyers. Additionally, the Utter Bar calls on NBA branches and forums to organize peaceful marches in their jurisdictions to address these concerns.
