Supreme Court Imposes N40 Million Fine on Mike Ozekhome
In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court has directed Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Mike Ozekhome to pay a substantial fine of N40 million. This decision, delivered on Tuesday, stems from the 2019 Imo state governorship case.
Justice Tijani Abubakar, presiding over the case, issued the fine against Ozekhome, citing his filing of a frivolous, vexatious, and irritating motion related to the Imo State governorship matter.

The N40 million fine is to be personally paid by Mike Ozekhome to four respondents involved in the motion. These respondents, namely Action People’s Party (APP), Uche Nnadi, Uche Nwosu, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), were dragged before the Court in the motion seeking to revalidate the suit that led to the removal of Emeka Ihedioha as Governor of Imo State in 2019.

Ozekhome’s argument in the motion centered around the claim that the incumbent Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, unlawfully spent the four years that Mr Ihedioha should have served.
This ruling follows the recent dismissal by the Supreme Court of a suit filed by Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State.
Ihedioha had sought a certificate of return as the rightful Governor of Imo State, challenging the qualification of Governor Hope Uzodinma. The Supreme Court declared Uzodinma the authentic winner of the 2019 governorship election in Imo State.
This development emphasizes the judiciary’s stance against filing motions deemed frivolous and serves as a deterrent against such actions in legal proceedings.
