OBIAGELI EZEKWESILI: CRITIQUE OF ACTIVISM
Mrs. Obiageli Ezekwesili finds herself among a select group of Nigerians who often wear sanctimony as a cloak of national honour to pursue activism. Ezekwesili’s approach prioritises flamboyant activism over measured caution and factual accuracy. While talk is cheap, she appears to overlook the sanctity of facts.
A fellow traveller in this seemingly distorted activism is Professor Chidi Odinkalu, who, in a display of apparent ignorance, recently launched an attack on Senator Godswill Akpabio with an article titled “The Uncommon Lawlessness of Godswill Obot Akpabio.”

Both Ezekwesili and Odinkalu, residing abroad, engage in destructive armchair activism, focusing on the judiciary. They led the charge against Senator Akpabio’s role as a Senator and subsequent election as President of the Senate.

Ezekwesili’s recent outburst on social media lacked substance when scrutinized more deeply. She failed to clearly explain how Senator Akpabio supposedly benefited from what she derogatorily termed the “rottenness of Nigeria’s judiciary.”
Her frustration with the Senate President’s adherence to parliamentary tenets led her to make unsubstantiated claims against the Court of Appeal. However, the Court had previously ruled against Senator Akpabio’s interests during pre-election litigation, demonstrating its impartiality.
Odinkalu admitted himself to the Nigerian Bar alongside Senator Akpabio, displaying envy and ignorance in his criticisms. His assertions regarding the APC primaries for the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District, where he claimed the original winner was edged out by Akpabio, are unfortunate.

The National Working Committee of the APC conducted the primaries, concluding on June 9, 2022. Contrary to Odinkalu’s claims, the retired DIG Ekpoudom did not emerge as the APC candidate. The Supreme Court’s judgment in Suit No.: SC/CV/1476/2022 clarified these issues, including the fact that only the NWC of a political party has the power to organize primaries.
Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, Ezekwesili, Odinkalu, and Mike Igini, former INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, continue to peddle misinformation. Their false narratives impugn the judiciary based on half-truths and deep propaganda.
Concerning Senator Akpabio’s presidential bid, no constitutional or electoral impediment prevents him from contesting a senatorial primary after withdrawing from the presidential race.
In conclusion, the wisdom emphasized in the Holy Book should guide Ezekwesili and Odinkalu to refrain from publicly disgracing themselves by delving into matters they seem to know little or nothing about.
