It is an honour to deliver this goodwill message at the book presentation of the 5th Annual Criminal Law Review Conference, with the significant theme “Revitalisation of the Administration of Justice in Nigeria.”

First and foremost, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to the convener, Mr. JB Dawudu SAN, for recognizing the importance of the Nigerian Bar Association and extending the invitation to me.

His consistent dedication to promoting the rule of law, a commitment he initiated even before assuming the presidency of the Nigerian Bar Association between 2010-2012, deserves commendation. The motto of our esteemed association, “PROMOTING THE RULE OF LAW,” aligns seamlessly with his enduring efforts.

I take this moment to celebrate Mr. JB Dawudu SAN for his steadfastness in advancing the cause of the rule of law. His commitment to maintaining, defending, and ensuring the independence of the bar and the judiciary is noteworthy. As demonstrated by the convener, consistency is not just a virtue but a testament to the unwavering dedication to a noble cause.

Senator Tony Nwoye's Outburst: A Critical Analysis: Dr Ubani

As we gather here today, I am the 31st President of the Nigerian Bar Association, with my predecessor and successor representing the 25th and 32nd presidents, respectively. This gap in leadership signifies the passage of time and the evolution of responsibilities. It underscores the essence of respecting seniority within our legal community and exemplifies the principles of the rule of law.

During the insightful address by the President of the Court of Appeal, I resonated with her emphasis on the need to educate the public. Legal practitioners must acknowledge our role in the judiciary’s current challenges. The erosion of public trust, exacerbated by baseless accusations and unwarranted criticism, necessitates introspection within our profession.

I wish to express my sincere apologies to the judiciary on behalf of the legal community for any unjustified instigations or castigations. The senior advocates, in particular, must recognize their pivotal role and strive to uphold the standards of professionalism. Christopher Sapara Williams’ words, “A LAWYER LIVES FOR THE DIRECTION OF HIS PEOPLE AND FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE COURSE OF HIS NATION,” serve as a poignant reminder of our responsibility.

The rule of law extends beyond legal statutes; it encompasses our attitudes, manners, and interactions with the public. The recent incident at the International Bar Association (IBA) Conference, where baseless allegations were made against our judiciary, is shameful and disgraceful. We must uphold the integrity of our legal system, primarily when representing our nation on an international platform.

In conclusion, the rule of law is not merely about legal statutes; it encompasses our conduct, attitudes, and interactions. Our commitment to the rule of law should reflect in our professionalism, responsibility, and dedication to justice. As we engage in the discussions and deliberations of this conference, I am confident that we will contribute meaningfully towards revitalizing the administration of justice in Nigeria.

A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE 2023 NATIONAL MEDICAL AND HEALTH LAW CONFERENCE AND INDUCTION OF MEMBERS OF THE INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL AND HEALTH LAW (IMHL), HELD ON NOVEMBER 21, 2023 AT THE MERIT HOUSE, MAITAMA, ABUJA

I commend the Attorney General of the Federation for his efforts in reviewing the implementation of the Administration of the Criminal Justice Act (ACJA). The collaboration between the Attorney General’s office and the Nigerian Bar Association is crucial for achieving the common goal of a just and peaceful society.

Thank you for the opportunity to address this distinguished gathering. Let us commit to upholding the rule of law in every aspect of our professional and personal lives.

God bless us all.
