Congratulations to the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Lagos branch on the upcoming FIDA Week Conference. The conference will be held on October 31, 2023, at the Nigeria Institute of International Affairs, Kofo Abayomi, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The theme of the event is Gender-Based Violence: Stemming the Tide, which is very appropriate given the global issue of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence against women and girls. Unfortunately, this issue remains one of the most severe human rights violations in Nigeria.
Despite notable progress achieved in recent years, such as adopting a comprehensive legislative framework and gender quotas, strengthening institutions to enforce these laws, and efforts to challenge discriminatory social stereotypes, more efforts are still needed.
Government authorities at all levels in Nigeria must work towards upholding the rights of women and girls in all aspects of their lives. They should promote women’s economic and political participation and empowerment, as these are critical factors in preventing gender-based violence against women and fully implementing the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law.
The police and judicial institutions should give high priority to effectively investigating and prosecuting incidents of violence against women and girls.
I wish all the distinguished attendees of the FIDA Week fruitful and rewarding deliberations.
