Remembering Professor B. O. Nwabueze SAN: A Trailblazing Legacy in Legal Scholarship
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Benjamin Nwabueze, SAN, CON, the esteemed Chairman of BOSAN. Professor Nwabueze passed away peacefully on October 29, 2023, at 94. He was a distinguished legal scholar, an advocate for the Igbo cause, and a trailblazer in constitutional law.
Professor Nwabueze’s contributions to legal scholarship were exceptional, and his impact on the legal community in Nigeria and beyond was profound. He received his early education at C.M.S Central School, Atani and C.M.S Central School, Onitsha. He studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science, earning his LL.D. from the University of London.
He served in various academic and professional capacities, including at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the University of Zambia. As an author of over 200 published articles and numerous books on constitutional law, Professor Nwabueze’s literary legacy was unparalleled. His works on constitutionalism, presidentialism, and judicialism were instrumental in shaping legal discourse in Nigeria and beyond.

His autobiography, “Ben Nwabueze: His Life, Works, and Times,” is a testament to his remarkable journey and contributions to the legal fraternity. Professor Nwabueze’s dedication to the Igbo cause was unwavering, and his leadership within various Igbo organizations was exemplary. He played an instrumental role in the establishment of Ohaneze Ndigbo, a socio-cultural organization that promotes the interests of the Igbo people.
The legal community mourns the loss of a distinguished scholar and advocate. We extend our deepest sympathies to Professor Nwabueze’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
His legacy will continue to inspire generations of legal scholars and practitioners, serving as a beacon of excellence and dedication in the pursuit of legal scholarship and the advancement of constitutional law. Details regarding the burial arrangements of our revered colleague will be communicated in due course.
