Accusers of Fraudulent Academic Records Given 30 Days to Present Evidence – Prof. Wole Soyinka

Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has challenged those accusing him of fraudulent academic claims. He calls upon them to submit all evidence supporting their claims to relevant anti-graft agencies and the Directorate of Prosecutions within 30 days for a thorough investigation.

Soyinka made this announcement in a statement titled “A Moral Call to Amoral Conscripts” following an online publication that disputed his academic records.

The renowned playwright has expressed his willingness to waive any protection granted under the statute of limitations, insisting that the laws governing fraudulent academic records should be invoked and applied to these allegations to their fullest extent.

Soyinka declared that if found guilty, he would willingly relinquish any titles and honours he had accumulated throughout his career, from the most obscure to the most prestigious.

Furthermore, Soyinka asserted that if these allegations are once again proven to be baseless, all his accusers should commit to jumping off the symbolic River Niger bridge as a gesture of moral recompense.

Soyinka has communicated his stance to various organizations, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Pan-African Writers Association in Accra, the Nigerian Association of Authors, the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, the University of Leeds, the alleged Bristol Primary Source, and his alma mater, as well as the media.

In his words, “A document of unparalleled malignity, reminiscent of the era of General Sani Abacha’s worldwide smear campaign against his opponents during his despotic, corrupt, and murderous regime, has resurfaced.

Modified to fit the debased culture of the internet, it is now circulating under the auspices of a democratic political party, supposedly committed to the principles of freedom of opinion and expression. The contents of this document are once again attributed to a Bristol schoolteacher.

“While awaiting a decision from my legal team on whether or not to dignify the current sponsors of this malicious publication with legal action, I wish to state in advance that I voluntarily waive all protection under the statute of limitations.

“I also declare, in advance, that if found guilty, I shall voluntarily renounce any titles and honours I may have earned throughout my entire career, ranging from the most obscure to the most esteemed.

“In return, I expect those spreading these baseless allegations to provide all evidence, no matter how minimal, to the nation’s investigative agencies, including Directorates of Prosecutions, EFCC, ICPC, and the institutions affected, within the next thirty days.

Failure to do this elementary service in the public interest within the stipulated time frame, and/or if these allegations are once again proven to be unfounded, thus revealing that their sponsors can lay claim to neither honours in their careers nor honour in their origins, then, as a token of moral reparation, they should commit to jumping off the symbolic River Niger bridge. They should be provided with life jackets to ensure a life of remorse after this symbolic purification, but be linked together in a commendable unity of purpose.”
