Abdallah Abba, a student in the midst of writing his Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), was accused by his neighbour of stealing a phone. This accusation led to a pursuit of the alleged phone thief, resulting in Abdallah’s apprehension by the Joint Task Force (JTF), also known as Operation Farauta, in the state. Regrettably, Abdallah was subjected to alleged torture while in custody, which ultimately resulted in his tragic death.

The incident sparked widespread outrage, particularly on social media, where Ahmad Tukur Abba, the deceased’s elder brother, spearheaded a campaign for justice in response to this brutal killing. Abba asserted that his younger brother was falsely accused of stealing an iPhone 7 by their neighbour, Shuaibu Wambai Zumo, an Adamawa State Scholarship Board employee. He further alleged that the young victim was taken from their home by a group of men, later identified as members of Operation Farauta, who initially stated they intended to question him. Upon Abdallah’s return, he was reportedly in handcuffs and showed signs of severe physical abuse.

In light of these developments, the Air Force spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, stated that he was unaware of any arrests related to this incident. Meanwhile, the police, during a press conference held on September 23, 2023, made a commitment to thoroughly investigate the matter and prosecute any of its personnel found to be culpable or involved in violating human rights.

This incident has underscored the importance of upholding human rights and ensuring justice in alleged abuse of power and extrajudicial actions.
