A group advocates gender equality in govt appointments.

A group,  Alliance for Deepening Democracy, has appealed to newly-elected state governors to ensure gender equality in the formation of their executive councils.

The coalition emphasised the need for governors to address inclusion gaps by appointing representatives from marginalised groups, including youths and persons with disabilities, as commissioners.

A statement on Tuesday by the group quoted the Chairman of the Steering Committee of the alliance, Mr Edetaen Ojo, who is the Executive Director of Media Rights Agenda, as saying, “Besides the need to comply with the National Gender Policy and other instruments, which require that government should be constituted in a manner that is inclusive and representative, ensuring gender equity and diversity in the constitution of executive councils at both federal and state levels is imperative to foster social cohesion and create a more just and inclusive society where everyone can have a sense of belonging.”

Meanwhile, the group frowned on “the recurring trend of appointing children or other family members of former governors and influential political figures as commissioners in various states. This pattern of creating and nurturing political dynasties is viewed as undemocratic, nepotistic, and detrimental to good governance.”
