2023 Elections: INEC to Prosecute 774 Persons for Electoral Offences

Nigeria’s Electoral Umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, has revealed that it will Prosecute 774 Persons arrested for various electoral Offences in the 2023 elections.

The INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, made revaluations in Abuja at the Monthly review forum on Human Rights and the 2023 elections organized by the National Human Rights Commission.

Represented by the Deputy Director of Prosecution of the Commission, Mr Nasara Auta, Professor Yakubu explained that the Inspector General of Police recently forwarded over two hundred case files on electoral crimes to the Commission for Prosecution of the Perpetrators.

According to him, three states, Imo, Kwara and Borno, were not among the states with shades of electoral offences during and after the 2023 general election.

Professor Yakubu said the commission collaborates with the Nigerian Bar Association NBA for Pro Bono legal services to prosecute electoral offenders.

The Executive Secretary National Human Rights Commission, Mr Tony Ojukwu, advocated online voting in Nigeria.

Ojukwu, represented by his Senior Human Rights Adviser, Mr Hillary Ogbona, promised that the commission would treat all reported rights violations during and after the 2023 polls.

Also, the Commandant General of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC Ahmed Audi, represented by the Commandant Election Monitoring Unit of NSCDC, Fatima-Binta Ilesanmi, reiterated that the Corps will continue to be professional and committed in the discharge of their mandates.

He noted that the trial of electoral and human right violator will ensure victims are treated fairly and reasonably.

The monthly review forum by the National Human Rights Commission was to provide the public with information and data about rights abuses in the 2023 elections.
