Restore the confidence of Nigerians in the nation's electoral process: CSO

An International Civil Society Organisation known as the “Labour-Civil Society Front” has called on the Nigerian judiciary to restore the confidence of Nigerians in the nation’s electoral process and popular democratic participation by being firm and just in handling the cases before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

A Co-Convener and Spokesperson for the Labour-Civil Society Front, Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, made the call during a World Press Conference in Abuja.

Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo noted that with the New Electoral Act 2022 in place, Nigerians had made considerable sacrifices to register and participate fully in the election due to the hope for transparency in the process and the belief that their votes would count.

According to Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, the inability of INEC to abide strictly by the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, especially the transmission of results from polling units and uploading results into the INEC Result Viewing Portal, IREV technology, gave room for manipulation of results manually. As a result, it dashed the hope of Nigerians for credible elections and the emergence of qualitative political leadership across Nigeria.

Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo said as a people of conscience and vanguards for concerned citizens and democrats in the seat of history, the organization is committed to ensuring that political leadership is not foisted on the country at the expense of the democratic gains made so far since 1999.

While recalling the full use of technology in state elections conducted in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun, Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo expressed disappointment that INEC officials disregarded the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and their own electoral guidelines, a development she described as returning Nigeria into a lawless society which the judiciary must rise to the occasion.

The Spokesperson of the Labour-Civil Society Front, Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, maintained that if the nation’s judiciary fails to act expeditiously, it will amount to a denial of justice and an invitation to self-help and anarchy.

The Labour-Civil Society Front has membership drawn from local and international CSOs, youths, women and students bodies, and labour unions, has Senator Shehu Sani, Mr Olisa Agbakoba, SAN and comrade Salisu Mohammed as other Co-Conveners of the organization.
