The Nigeria Police in Sokoto state says no politician would be allowed to take advantage of the people to derail the effort of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure a free and fair gubernatorial election in the state.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Muhammad Usaini Gumel, stated this at launching a new operation, ‘Operation KULE CHAS’ in the state. The Commissioner cautioned that any politician who tries to sabotage the INEC would be arrested and prosecuted.

He explained that the launching of the new operation, KULE CHAS, was informed following a separate meeting of PDP and APC parties, described by the CP as a separate ploy to introduce thuggery that might shortchange the election process in the state.

CP Gumel warned that the police would track and arrest anybody found with any “wanton” actions, with no possibility of negotiation following such arrests. He emphasized that any politician intervening after such arrests would be regarded as an enemy of the state and subsequently detained.

During separate meetings held by the two major political parties, weapons were being brandished by political thugs and supporters from both sides. CP Gumel clarified that weapons production occurred under the pretext of celebrating a political victory, with subsequent incidents involving gatherings of hunters and other unconventional forces at these meetings.

Furthermore, CP Gumel revealed that the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security had convened an emergency meeting with political party leaders to discuss the launch of Operation Kule Chas.
