Following the introduction of the redesigned naira notes by the apex bank, Nigerians have continued to experience a nationwide absence of the currency.

Some areas of Abeokuta also glimpsed some protests by angry residents as they grieve the adversity the situation has subjected them to.

The crisis was said to have begun at a branch of GTbank in the Asero area of Abeokuta, where clients had queued since 4 am but could not withdraw cash.

Channels Television observed burnfires in many areas as police officers mobilized strategically to maintain law and order.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, called for calm, saying the authorities controlled the situation.

He identified the affected areas as Panseke, Sapon and Asero, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has put all the Area Commanders on red alert due to the protest.

 

The police spokesman said deploying operatives to the flash points is necessary to prevent hoodlums from looting people’s properties.

According to him, the demonstration is unnecessary as it will aggravate the situation in the state.

People suppose to exercise patience. This demonstration will aggravate the situation because the bankers will fear being attacked when you demonstrate. They will shut down, and that will worsen the situation.

“The people of Ogun State should eschew violence. Instead, they should endure a little so the situation will be controlled.

“Nobody is happy that the scarcity of currency and other things is on. However, the demonstration cannot bring any solution,” the police spokesman said.

When asked if there was any casualty, Oyeyemi said the State Police Command had not yet received any death report.
