Court Grants Bail to Suspended UNICAL Dean and Lawyer Amid Allegations

In a notable development at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Prof. Cyril Ndifon, the suspended Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), and his lawyer, Sunny Anyanwu, have been granted bail.

The bail comes in the wake of charges levelled against them by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), including allegations of sexual harassment and attempts to pervert the course of justice.

Bail Conditions

The court, presided over by Justice James Omotoso, set bail at N250 million for Prof. Ndifon, requiring him to provide two sureties who own properties within the FCT with a minimum valuation of N150 million each. Additionally, Prof. Ndifon and his sureties must submit their bank statements, and the professor must surrender his international passport to the court.

Mr Anyanwu, the lawyer, was granted bail for N50 million, with two sureties who will submit their bank statements.

Court’s Ruling

In his ruling, Justice Omotoso emphasized the need for an undertaking from the defendants not to interfere with the case, readiness to attend trial, and a commitment not to cause delays. The judge adjourned the matter till Monday for the continuation of the hearing.

The granting of bail provides temporary relief for Prof. Ndifon and Mr. Anyanwu as they confront the legal proceedings against them.
