FIDA Nigeria-Abuja Advocates Against Female Genital Mutilation: Report on Outreach at Wumba Community to Raise Awareness and Provide Legal Support.

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria is a prominent non-governmental organization committed to promoting and protecting the rights of women and children in Nigeria.

Established in 1964, FIDA Nigeria operates as a chapter of the global FIDA organization, working tirelessly to advance gender equality, justice, and empowerment for women within the Nigerian legal system and society at large.

With a diverse membership comprising legal practitioners, activists, and advocates, FIDA Nigeria plays a pivotal role in advocating for legislative reforms, providing legal aid services, conducting awareness campaigns, and offering support to women facing various forms of discrimination and violence.

Through its impactful initiatives and dedication to the cause of women’s rights, FIDA Nigeria continues to be a driving force in the fight for gender justice and social change across the country.

On February 16th, 2024, FIDA Abuja embarked on an advocacy mission to the Wumba Community around the Lokogoma Axis of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The purpose of this outreach was to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of female genital mutilation (FGM) and educate community members on their rights under Section 6 of the VAPP Act 2015.

The advocacy session commenced by introducing FIDA and its mandate. Community members were enlightened about the legal framework in place to combat FGM and protect individuals from this harmful practice. The outreach proved to be highly instructive, with members of the community embracing FIDA and its message.

A significant moment during the event occurred when a distressed woman appealed to FIDA for assistance in rescuing her son, who had been unlawfully taken from her by her husband. In response, the Chairperson advised the mother to formally lodge her complaint with the FIDA Secretariat for appropriate intervention.

As part of the outreach, FIDA distributed informative flyers to the community, further reinforcing the message against FGM and empowering individuals to assert their rights.

The significance of this advocacy outreach cannot be overstated. By engaging directly with communities like Wumba, FIDA Abuja aims to combat harmful practices such as FGM and promote gender equality and women’s rights. Through education and empowerment, FIDA seeks to create positive societal change and contribute to the eradication of harmful cultural norms.

In attendance were prominent members of FIDA Abuja, including Vice Chairperson Francisca Akaniro Opara, Assistant Publicity Secretary Dooshima Abege, and Welfare Secretary Emerita June Idang-Etim, among others. Their presence underscored FIDA’s commitment to advancing its mission and serving as a beacon of hope for women and girls in Nigeria.

The outreach at Wumba Community represents a crucial step in FIDA Abuja’s ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence and promote a culture of respect and equality. Through continued advocacy and community engagement, FIDA remains dedicated to building a more just and inclusive society for all.
