LAWYERS AND THE LAW IN A DEMOCRATIC DISPENSATION: NIGERIA’S EXPERIENCE FROM 1999-2023 LESSONS LEARNED, CHALLENGES, AND OPPORTUNITIES: AFAM OSIGWE

I would like to express my heartfelt commendation to Mr Gabriel C. Adikwu, Esq., and the entire team at Gabriel Adikwu & Co. for hosting this year’s insightful lecture, providing us with a platform to deliberate on the growth and development of Nigeria, with a specific focus on the crucial role lawyers play in shaping our nation.

Abraham Lincoln solidified democratic ideology in his Gettysburg address when he declared, “…that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that the government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

The concept of democracy, as envisioned by the proclaimer of the emancipation proclamation, is inseparable from freedom. If democracy is considered the structure, then freedom undoubtedly forms the foundation upon which the structure stands.

As Winston Churchill stated in a 1948 speech to the British House of Commons, “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” This piece aims to assess Nigeria’s journey thus far, evaluating the country’s experience from 1999 to 2023 and identifying the lessons learned, challenges, and opportunities.

In this exploration, we delve into the intricate dynamics that have shaped Nigeria’s democratic experience, addressing the imperatives of our collective history. By critically examining the trajectory of our democracy, we can discern valuable insights illuminating the path forward.
