It is with profound sadness and deep respect that Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, extends his heartfelt condolences to the esteemed judiciary and the Benue Bar on the painful demise of Hon. Justice Shagbaor Ikyegh, a distinguished jurist who served as the presiding justice in the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt division.
Hon. Justice Shagbaor (JCA) stood as a towering figure in the realm of justice, leaving an indelible mark on the legal landscape of Nigeria. His commitment to upholding the principles of fairness, integrity, and the rule of law was exemplary, making him a stalwart within the judiciary.

The late Justice Shagbaor Ikyegh, an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, was called to the Nigerian Bar Association in 1980. His illustrious career saw him commence his judicial journey at the Benue State High Court in 1991, where he demonstrated unwavering dedication to the pursuit of justice. In 2010, he ascended to the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt, in Rivers State, where he continued to serve with distinction.

As the presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ikyegh occupied the 10th position on the seniority list and was due for retirement in 2028. His legal acumen and commitment to excellence were evident in his pivotal role in delivering significant judgments. Notably, his recent majority decision affirming the victory of Dapo Abiodun as Governor of Ogun State showcased his dedication to the principles of justice.
The passing of Hon. Justice Shagbaor leaves a void that will be deeply felt across the legal fraternity. His legacy of upholding the tenets of justice, his contributions to legal jurisprudence, and his role in shaping the judiciary’s direction will be a testament to his remarkable career.
