Edo: Man Commits Self-Harm After Stabbing Tax Collector Amid N50 Dispute

In a harrowing incident that unfolded on Mission Road, Oredo Local Government Area of Benin City, Edo State, a yet-to-be-identified man reportedly stabbed a tax collector to death on Friday. The shocking altercation, which revolved around a dispute over a daily ticket fee of N50.00, escalated rapidly, leading to tragic consequences.

The argument reached a tipping point when the revenue collector kicked the wheelbarrow containing bags of items in response to the disagreement. In a grim turn of events, the wheelbarrow pusher retaliated by fatally stabbing the tax collector with a knife. Disturbingly, upon realizing the consequences of his actions, the assailant turned the weapon on himself, inflicting a fatal wound to his neck.

The incident triggered pandemonium, prompting nearby residents and shop owners to hastily close their shops, fearing further violence. An eyewitness, speaking anonymously, decried the episode as a “human rights violation by some overzealous revenue collectors” in Benin Metropolis.

While acknowledging the inappropriate approach taken by the wheelbarrow pusher, the witness emphasized that nothing justifies such a gruesome act of violence. The economic hardships faced by individuals were cited as contributing factors to the escalating tensions.

SP Chidi Nwanbuzor, the police spokesperson in the state, confirmed the incident to journalists. The tragic incident sheds light on the complexities and challenges individuals face in economic difficulties, urging a broader conversation on effective conflict resolution and the humane treatment of citizens in revenue collection processes.
