Northern Elders Disassociate Themselves from Gumi's Controversial Statements on Tinubu and Wike

On Monday, the Northern Elders publicly distanced themselves from the contentious remarks made by the controversial Muslim cleric Ahmed Gumi. This move follows Gumi’s recent verbal attacks on President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

In a statement released in Abuja, the Northern Elders criticized Gumi’s comments, deeming them divisive and detrimental to national unity. According to the spokesman of the North-East Consolidated Peoples Forum (NCPF), Alhaji Abba Liman, the elders condemned the inflammatory nature of Gumi’s statements, labelling them as a misinterpretation of historical events.

The forum emphasized that Gumi’s views do not represent the collective stance of the North, nor do they reflect the broader interests of Nigeria. They further rebuked the religious and ethnic incitement propagated by what they referred to as “misguided elements and their sponsors,” cautioning against actions that could foster disunity in the country.

Gumi criticized Wike for receiving the Israeli ambassador and called for Tinubu’s dismissal. Disagreeing with Gumi’s assertions, the Northern Elders condemned his divisive rhetoric, advocating for a consolidation of peace, unity, and progress in Nigeria. They underscored the importance of upholding the principles of the Nigerian constitution, which allow individuals, regardless of their background, to hold positions of power as long as they operate within the confines of the law.

The forum concluded by expressing their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Chief (Barr) Nyesom Wike, reiterating their commitment to Nigeria’s well-being and promoting a harmonious governance system for the nation.
