Suspected Thugs Beat SDP Zonal Chairman to Stupor in Kogi

The Zonal Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi State, Pastor Sunday Atabo, was reportedly attacked by suspected political thugs at his residence in Aja-Odi Agojoeju, Ofu Local Government Area (LGA), on Saturday night. The assailants, armed with dangerous weapons, including AK-47s, cutlasses, and rods, left the chairman in a coma and destroyed his properties and sources of livelihood during the assault.
According to James Adaji, a family member, the attackers attempted to set Atabo’s house ablaze, but their efforts were thwarted. As a result of the attack, Atabo, the General Overseer of Bible Believers Church, Agojeju-Efakwu, Ofu LGA, is hospitalized in a critical condition, fluctuating between consciousness and unconsciousness.

Arome Okeme, the state secretary of the SDP, condemned the incident and highlighted a pattern of attacks targeting party leaders and members, suggesting a ploy to deter participation in the forthcoming gubernatorial election. The SDP’s director of new media, ID Ijele, echoed the concern, emphasizing the need for security agencies to address the recurring violence and ensure the safety of party members and leaders.
The SDP has urged the intervention of law enforcement authorities, including the commissioner of police, Department of State Services (DSS), Army, Civil Defence, and other security agencies, to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further attacks.
