Peter Obi Urges Government to Prioritize Teachers Over Corrupt Politicians

As World Teachers’ Day was celebrated, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), seized the occasion to call upon the Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to shift its focus from celebrating corrupt politicians to appreciating and honouring Nigerian teachers.

Obi emphasized that teachers deserve far greater recognition than those who have contributed to the nation’s impoverishment. He argued that there can be no genuine societal development without acknowledging the indispensable role played by teachers in nation-building.

The former Governor of Anambra State underscored that the cornerstone of societal development lies in human capital development, a goal that can only be achieved through education and the immeasurable contributions of teachers.

Obi expressed his admiration for the unwavering commitment, patience, and dedication exhibited by most teachers, especially those at the grassroots level, in pursuing academic excellence and character development among their students.

He cited the example of Mr Akeem Badru, who was awarded the 2023 Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Award, as an illustration of the exceptional dedication of Nigerian teachers.

Recognizing the Value of Teachers on World Teachers’ Day

Obi maintained that it is high time the government began to celebrate teachers who have distinguished themselves through their dedication and hard work instead of lavishing praise on individuals whose contributions have contributed to the nation’s challenges.

Reflecting on his time in office, Obi acknowledged that the many achievements recorded in the education sector in Anambra State were made possible by the devotion and commitment of the state’s teachers.

He called upon teachers to remain resilient and patient in the face of the prevailing economic hardships in the country, emphasizing the importance of looking ahead to a brighter future for Nigeria.

Furthermore, Obi urged the government to prioritize teachers’ salaries, ensuring they are paid promptly. He stressed the need for an education revolution in Nigeria, including efforts to address the issue of 22 million out-of-school children through increased investment in education and the employment of more teachers.

Obi specifically highlighted the critical nature of primary education and called on governments at all levels to intervene in schools operated by private and voluntary organizations, ensuring that teachers in these institutions are remunerated on par with their counterparts in public schools.
