Acting IGP Orders Treatment of Gunshot Victims Without Police Reports

In an internal memo signed by the Force Principal Staff Officer, Olatunji Disu, dated October 25, 2023, the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Egbetokun, directed the immediate treatment of gunshot victims without the need for a police report.

The directive, as highlighted in the memo addressed to top police officials, including Deputy Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police, is in adherence to the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act 2017.

Demand for Justice in the Tragic Murder of University of Port Harcourt Student.

The Act, which became effective in 2018, stipulates that all medical facilities are obligated to receive victims of gunshot wounds for urgent treatment, irrespective of the absence of a police report.

According to the memo, the IGP emphasized the enforcement of this Act without hesitation and urged recipients to educate the public through widespread dissemination of this information. The directive was issued following a letter from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare dated October 3, 2023, expressing concerns about the low compliance with the Act.

The Minister of State, Olatunji Alausa, cited inadequate awareness among law enforcement officers and concerned citizens, leading to a reluctance to comply with the provisions of the law.
