The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kayode Ariwoola, administered the oath of office to nine Justices of the Court of Appeal during a Wednesday swearing-in ceremony in Abuja.

In his address at the ceremony, Justice Ariwoola advised the newly appointed judges to maintain a high standard of conduct, emphasizing that their actions would be subject to intense public scrutiny.

He stated, “Congratulations once again. The public scrutiny of your conduct will assume astronomical dimensions because you have willingly accepted an appointment that will place you perpetually in the public eye.”

Responsibilities of the Newly Sworn-In Court of Appeal Justices

The CJN emphasized that the pace and intensity of public evaluation of their behaviour had significantly increased from that moment. He encouraged the new justices to remain steadfast and uphold their principles to avoid falling out of favour with both the Almighty God and the Nigerian people who have high expectations of them.

He noted, “It takes nothing to join the crowd, but it takes a lot to stand alone with a clear conscience.” Also Read: https://legalattorneyblog.com/2023/09/18/changes-in-judicial-appointments-court-of-appeal-expands-as-supreme-court-shrinks/

Justice Ariwoola also highlighted the prevailing circumstances in Nigeria, where the country has witnessed a surge in various criminal activities, resulting in a rise in litigation cases. He pointed out that political issues have significantly contributed to the increased caseload.

He stated, “The times we are in are not pleasant, to say the least. No court in the land is spared from this. We are constantly on our toes, and the caseload continues to rise in response to the challenges of the time.”

Promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution and Reducing Litigation

Justice Ariwoola stressed the urgent need to promote alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to reduce the burden on the courts and preserve both human and material resources. He encouraged the adoption of less litigation and more efficient dispute-resolution methods.

In conclusion, the CJN urged the newly sworn-in justices to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and integrity while discharging their duties on the Court of Appeal.
