Council of Legal Education Approves Accreditation for Five Universities to Admit Law Students in Nigeria: Addressing Backlog and Enhancing Legal Education

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) in Nigeria has recently approved accreditation for five universities to admit law students, marking a significant development in legal education in the country. This decision comes after careful consideration and assessment by the council, aiming to enhance access to legal education and address the backlog of law graduates resulting from various challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and industrial actions by academic staff.

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) serves as the regulatory body overseeing legal education and training in Nigeria, particularly through its supervision of the Nigerian Law School. Chaired by Chief Emeka Ngige, SAN, the council plays a crucial role in maintaining standards and ensuring the quality of legal education across the country.

During its quarterly meeting, the Council of Legal Education (CLE) approved accreditation for several universities to admit law students. Notable among the accredited institutions are Adamawa State University, Mubi; Mewar International University, Masaka; Federal University, Wukari; Taraba State University, Jalingo; and Nigerian Police Academy, Wudil. This decision is based on comprehensive reports from the Board of Studies chaired by the Director-General, Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN.

Additionally, the council sanctioned referred admission cases and students involved in examination malpractice and other misconduct. It also endorsed the report and recommendations of the Appointments, Promotions, and Disciplinary Committee (AP&DC) for promoting and disciplining the Nigerian Law School’s senior academic and non-academic staff. The council further approved the promotion of intermediate academic and library staff based on the Management Publication Assessment Committee report.

Furthermore, the council announced the commencement of a Mid-Year Academic Session for the 2024/2025 academic calendar to address the backlog of law graduates. This session is intended to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ASUU industrial action. However, it clarified that universities exceeding their approved admission quotas are ineligible for this session.

The council deferred the management memo to review penalties for applicants previously punished by their universities, allowing further consultations. It also expressed appreciation for interventions aimed at improving facilities at various campuses of the Nigerian Law School, acknowledging the efforts of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister for Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, as well as the Governors of Enugu and Ebonyi States for their contributions to infrastructure development.
