Sylva Launches Gubernatorial Campaign in Bayelsa Despite Court Disqualification

Despite facing a recent court ruling disqualifying him as the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in Bayelsa State, Chief Timipre Sylva officially initiated his campaign for the November 11 gubernatorial elections on Wednesday.

This decision comes in the wake of Justice Donatus Okorowo’s verdict in the suit filed by APC member Deme Kolomo on June 13, 2023. The court determined that Sylva’s candidacy violated the constitutional provision that restricts individuals from being elected as governor more than twice. Sylva has expressed his intent to appeal this decision.

During the campaign launch, Sylva pledged to usher in a new era of human capital development, infrastructure improvement, gas sector expansion, job creation, and agricultural advancement. Commencing his campaign in Agbere and subsequently visiting the Ebedebiri Community and the Sagbama Local Government Council headquarters, all located in the Sagbama Council Area, Sylva emphasized his personal connection to the Agbere Community and assured its residents of his commitment to the area’s development. He vowed to complete the dormant shore protection project and deliver substantial progress to ensure that the people enjoy the benefits of democracy.

Sylva stated, “I consider myself an Agbere son, and that’s why I chose to begin my statewide campaigns in Agbere. We want to bring development to you; my incoming government is focused on human capacity development.

We have done it before, and we know what to do. We will connect this road to Omoku to promote industries, gas development, job opportunities, and agricultural growth. If you vote for the APC, you are voting for a better future and a departure from the current government of Douye Diri and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.”
