NBA AGC 2023: NGOZI EZEILO SAN SPEAKS ON ‘ACCESS TO JUSTICE, REALITY OR UNFULFILLED EXPECTATION.

Prof (Mrs) Ngozi Ezeilo SAN (Prof Public Law UNN) chronicles modalities to achieve a people-centred justice system

The panellist itemised some vital points to note in this regards

1; Access to infrastructure and legal assistance — She noted that there must be access to justice to ensure equality before the law, without which the whole concept of justice becomes elusive

2) Inclusive Justice
3) Priority Objectives that require the Government’s intervention
4) Role of the NBA– She noted that the NBA has a definite role mainly emanating from our training as lawyers

“The NBA must set up a fund for legal aid in this regard and throw it open for collaboration.

“Getting it Right, the time is now for the NBA to support adequate access to justice for those in need.

“There must be a support initiative to assist the poor and vulnerable; Access to justice must be centred on human survival.

Ezeilo urged the federal and State Governments to also tow this line, while the NBA should act as a watchdog, holding them to account.
