Proposed Amendments To The Practice Direction of ACJA 2015: FIDA-ABUJA.

FIDA (Nigeria) Abuja Branch, supported by Mac-Arthur Foundation, held a VALIDATION MEETING on the proposed amendments to the Practice Direction of ACJ Act, 2015, on the 12th of July, 2023.

Welcoming the participants, the Chairperson of the Branch, Chibuzo M. Nwosu, Esq, commended parties for their brilliant inputs towards the amendment of the Practice Direction on the WhatsApp platform and enjoined members to actively participate in the Validation session to achieve speedy dispensation of justice in the FCT.

An opening remark was given by Hon. Justice Ajayi Adeyemi on behalf of the Chief Judge (CJ) of the FCT, High Court, wherein she informed participants that the CJ would have loved to be present because he doesn’t joke about things that require improvement of the law.

Still, he couldn’t due to some other engagements. Furthermore, he extended his warm & best regards and promised that whatever the outcome of the deliberations, he would be ready to implement it. He commends the work FIDA is doing. She added that she is proud to be part of the programme because the ACJA is due for review, and she appreciated FIDA’s bold step.

Present at the Workshop was the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court, Hon. Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf (represented by Hon. Justice Ajayi Adeyemi), the Deputy Chief Registrar of the FCT High Court, Samuel Idhaliarhi, the NBA President, Y. C. Maikayu, SAN (represented by Huwaila Mohammed, Esq), Magistrates, Heads of Legal Departments from National Human Rights Commission, Nigerian Correctional Services, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

Also on the list are the Department of State Security, Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, Nigerian Law Reform Commission, Prosecutors from the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Ministry of Justice, Statutory and sub-committee members of the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee, Representatives from CLEEN foundation, Network of University Legal Aid Institutions (NULAI), Centre for Socio-Legal Studies (CSLS), Administration of Criminal Justice Reform and Review Department, PRAWA, PWAN Branches of the Nigerian Bar Association (including National, Bwari, Unity and Gwagwalada Branches).

The Consultant commenced the Workshop with a review of the recommendations and corrections made by participants towards the Practice Direction of ACJA, 2015, and the area focused on are basically:

a. Case management for corruption cases

b. Virtual proceedings

c. Witness funding.

In rounding up for the day, it was agreed that the recommendations and corrections would be incorporated into the proposed amendment of the Practice Direction.

The event ended with a closing remark by Ogechi Abu, the Chairperson of the Law Reform Committee.
