Fire Disaster: Centre Distributes Cash, Palliatives to 150 Victims in Borno.

In collaboration with the Borno state government, a non-governmental organisation, the Centre for Advocacy and Accountability Initiative CATAI, has distributed food and cash assistance to one hundred and fifty victims of the Maiduguri Monday Market fire disaster.

At an event in Maiduguri, Executive Director of the Centre Mu’azu Sadiq said the intervention with the support of the Switzerland embassy in Nigeria is to provide succour to the victims who have lost their means of livelihood.

According to him, the traders were carefully selected by the state committee to include male and female

traders as well as persons with disabilities to ensure that they bounce back to business and also build their resilience.

Mr Sadiq explained that one hundred traders would receive food items, including rice, sugar, cooking

oil and seasoning. In comparison, the remaining fifty traders would collect a grant of fifty thousand nairas each.

“We are targeting traders with little capital who do not have stalls or shops in the market. Borno state government has done a lot in providing palliatives to the victims, but we believe a lot still needs to be done to assist the traders,” Sadiq stressed.

Representative of the Chairman State High-powered Committee on Reconstruction of Monday Market, Mr Simon Malgwi, appreciated the NGO and Switzerland embassy for the intervention and called on well-meaning individuals and groups to continue to support the affected victims.

He also urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the cash and food assistance provided to better their means of livelihood.

Executive Director Network of Civil Society Organisations Bulama Abiso and Secretary Monday Market Traders Association Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed lauded the Organisation for the assistance, noting that the traders have been severely affected by the inferno, hence the need for more support from small-scale business owners.

The event’s high point was the symbolic presentation of the cheque and food items to the beneficiaries.
