Emerging Fields In The Legal Profession

Thanks to the increasing demand for legal services over the past couple of years, many areas of law are experiencing shifts in their growth revolutions. These sudden changes have jumpstarted many new and growing legal practice areas.

We know that the pandemic helped contribute to these emerging areas of law. However, many other social, political, technological, and environmental factors also affect the growth of different legal practice areas.

As technology advances, the need for legal laws and regulations to keep people safe will also continue to grow. Unfortunately, new technological discoveries happen quickly, sometimes outpacing the timeline to create proper regulatory standards. As a result, the demand for lawyers in this field is high as this timeline and process evolve.

What areas of law are growing?

The main areas of growing law are cybersecurity, cannabis, labour, elder law, energy, IP, health, and student loan law.

These growth areas don’t only affect new lawyers who are interested in transitioning to these eight fields. They also impact more experienced lawyers whose current scope of practice overlaps with these emerging practice areas. For example, employment lawyers must stay current on regulatory changes and laws related to labour law. The same goes for health lawyers and insurance lawyers.

At the same time, the practice of law is changing rapidly. Lawyers have become accustomed to working in remote or hybrid environments, and emerging technologies like ChatGPT are set to disrupt the legal industry.
