Kano: Victims of Kurmi Market appeal for assistance

Traders at Kurmi market Kano have appealed to the government, philanthropists and wealthy individuals to assist them following a fire outbreak in the early hours of Wednesday.

The traders demanded while receiving governor Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and top government officials at the market.

 

Speaking on behalf of those affected, Alhaji Haladu Sulaiman Mai Citta and Alhaji Ya’u Adamu Ibrahim explained that the inferno razed over 80 shops containing perfumes, ginger and plastic bags.

They stressed that properties worth millions of naira were destroyed entirely during the unfortunate incident.

The fire was attributed to a faulty electrical connection; they further said that over 2,500 youths were affected as they depended on the business for survival.

Also, the chairman of the Kurmi Market traders association, Alhaji Ya’u Idris Karas, commended the efforts of the kano state fire service, the Nigerian police force, and all relevant stakeholders for their prompt action in quenching the fire and ensuring the security of lives and properties.

In his remarks, kano state governor Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, represented by the executive secretary of Kano state emergency management agency (SEMA), Dr Saleh Aliyu Jili, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to moving commercial activities to international standards.

He stressed that they were at the market to condole traders and compile a comprehensive damages report for necessary action.

Dr Ganduje appealed to the traders to remain calm, as the government would do everything possible to alleviate their suffering.

Radio Nigeria reports that Kurmi market, located in the ancient city of Kano, serves as the sanctuary for Kano cultural heritages, where hand-made products with traditional and historical attachments are sold.
