The consensus candidate will consolidate gains of the 9th house: Gbajabiamila.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, says the decision to support the consensus candidate Tajudeen Abbas for the Speaker of the 10th House was to harp on legislative gains recorded by the 9th House.

The Speaker remarked at a meeting of members of the Joint Task-10th House, held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja.

Mr Gbajabiamila affirmed his loyalty to the party and said his decisdoesn’tsn’t translate to hatred for other aspirants.

He described Tajuddeen Abbas as a man of tremendous capabilities with the highest sponsorship of bills in the 9th House, having sponsored 74, out of which 21 have been assented to by the President.

He, therefore, urged the opposition party members-elect to support Abass and Kalu to emerge as the presiding officers, stressing they will be carried along.

In his remarks, the APC speaker nominee, Tajuddeen Abbas, urged the members-elect to engage in constructive criticism. He said he was chosen because of his pedigree, even though he denied sharing committees.

“Mr speaker has not discussed interests in the 10th Assembly. The Speaker’s support is based on my pedigree and capacity. He believes I would sustain the achievements of the ninth Assembly. Let the contestants engage you on the issues.

“What you need is constructive engagement. We need guided cooperation between the two tiers of government. So, please take note of that. It is a lie that committees have already been shared among certain members”, he said.

Also speaking, his deputy nominee, Benjamin Kalu, called for synergy amongst the political parties.

Kalu also assured that they would be assisted in upholding the problems of their constituencies, ensuring that inequality between the old and new members is dissolved.

Three contestants for the position of Speaker, Alhassan Ado-Dogwua, Makki Yalleman and Abdulraheem Olawuyi, announced their decision to step down and support the consensus candidates.
