The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has cautioned prominent fuel marketers against taking undue advantage of the Federal Government’s announcement of removing fuel subsidies.

He blamed the resurgence of fuel queues in the state to fuel marketers, who he said were taking a disproportionate edge off Nigerians by hiking fuel prices.

President Bola Tinubu had, in his inaugural speech on Monday, announced that there was no provision for subsidy in the reordered budget.

Shortly after the announcement, some filling stations in Lagos shut down operations, while those selling the product were besieged by citizens, leading to long queues and Traffic gridlocks.

Reacting to the issue during a visit to the State secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, on the first day of work after his swearing-in for a second term in office, Governor Sanwo-Olu pointed out that it is too early to start second-guessing the President and unfair on the part of the marketers to mete out such treatment to the citizenry.

“I think it is too early in the day for people to begin to second guess the President; this is a pronouncement, and I think it’s unfair for all of our significant marketers to want to start to seize opportunity where it’s not deserved, we all need to be sincere in this country.

If we really want to get things done, let’s know that yes, we might need to belt up a little bit, but it’s really so that we have a better life down the line; there’s nothing that has changed in that pronouncement to warrant fuel scarcity, I am sure that the Federal Government will be able to rise up and deal with it, so.

I want to encourage everyone to be law-abiding, to go about their regular businesses, and things will undoubtedly thin out for us for the better,” The Governor stated.

Accompanied by the Deputy Governor, the State Head of Service and Permanent Secretaries, Governor Sanwo-Olu chatted with civil servants. He listened to some of their challenges and explained that he visited specific Ministries.

Of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Economic Planning and Budget, Youth and Social Development and the Civil Service Commission so that they would be ready to further implement the six pillared governing agenda, “THEMESplus”, and the additional areas of focus.

He said, “It’s additional reforms, additional citizen-driven policies, where they need to work with us on each of those policies and ensure each time residents walk in here, it’s because they want to be served and for them to be ready for those services.

After the tete-a-tete with the Civil servants, Governor Sanwo-Olu went into a meeting behind closed doors with the Permanent Secretaries currently in charge of directing affairs in their various Ministries pending appointments of Executive Council Members.
