Trade Union Congress Adjourns Proposed Meeting: FG

The meeting between the Federal Government and the Trade Union Congress has been suspended until Tuesday next week to allow further consultations.

The meeting is the 2nd since Congress’ threat to embark on industrial action if the government refuses to stop the implementation of subsidy withdrawal.

Leading the Federal Government’s negotiation team, Mr Dele Alake told newsmen they had a fruitful discussion but that adopting the agreement needed the President’s consideration.

He, however, explained that the government would need to study the weight of the demands presented and return to the meeting with its outcome.

On minimum wage, Mr Alake said the President would set up a committee comprising Federal and State Governments’ representatives and those of the organised labour, as well as the private sector, to study the dynamics of the wage increase, its percentages, the numbers, and the categories to be affected.

While explaining their stance at the meeting, the President of the Trade Union Congress, Mr Festus Osifo, said they sought reversion to the status quo while negotiation continued.

He expressed the hope that TUC’s demands would be reviewed in the best interest of Nigerian workers.
