Central Planning Committee Denies Claims of Fund Solicitation for Mr. Ibu's Burial

The Central Planning Committee for the burial of the late Nollywood actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu, has refuted claims that the family is soliciting funds for his burial. According to Naija News, Mr. Ibu will be laid to rest on June 28, 2024, in his hometown of Amuri, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

In a statement released on Monday in Enugu, the Chairman of the Burial Committee, Monday Diamond Ani, described the allegations of the family begging for money online as “manipulative, malicious, fabricated, and engineered by an evil gang against Mr. Ibu both during his illness and after his death.”

Ani emphasised that despite the significant expenses incurred during Mr. Ibu’s illness across several hospitals in Nigeria, the Central Planning Committee has made comprehensive arrangements for his burial.

He noted that many of Mr. Ibu’s notable friends and family members have distanced themselves from the false claims. He warned those spreading these rumours to stop tarnishing Mr. Ibu’s reputation.

As part of the burial activities, Ani announced that a star-studded tribute performance and a novelty match will be held at the Base Event Centre in Enugu in Mr Ibu’s honour. He thanked the Enugu State Government and various individuals for their support, including accommodations, security personnel, transportation, and financial assistance.

Ani listed several artists expected to perform, including Rudeboy, Flavour, Odumeje, Akpororo, Chinyere Udoma, Gozie Okeke, Felix Ndukwe, Paul Nwokocha, Able Cee, Anyidons, and Kola Boy. Prominent figures such as Chief Pete Edochie, Osuofia, Patience Ozokwor, Osita Iheme, Chinedu Ikedieze, Mercy Johnson, Rachel Okonkwo, Destiny Etiko, Chinwe Owo, Victor Osuagu, Charles Anwurum, Ngozi Ezeonu, and AGN President Emeka Rollas are also expected to attend.

A documentary showcasing the life and times of John Okafor will be featured. The night of tribute on June 26 will be preceded by a novelty match on June 25, pitting celebrities and personalities against Rangers International Football Club of Enugu at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.

Ani firmly stated, “There was never a time when such a publication came from us. It is the handiwork of some miscreants and enemies of progress who must have wished for Mr Ibu’s death and is now happy that he is no more, using this medium to tarnish the name of Mr Ibu and the Okafor family.”

He clarified that raising funds to support the burial is customary in Igbo land, where well-wishers contribute to burial expenses. Some provide live cows, financial support, or logistical assistance, which is what is happening in Mr. Ibu’s case, and it is not unusual or inappropriate.
