In a significant move to improve the standard of compensation for legal services, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, has announced the establishment of remuneration committees across all NBA branches.

This development is part of the NBA administration’s ongoing efforts to enforce the Legal Practitioners Remuneration (for Business, Legal Service and Representation) Order, 2023, which was successfully passed under Mr. Maikyau’s leadership.

The Legal Practitioners Remuneration Order, 2023, aims to standardize and enhance the remuneration for legal services practitioners provide, addressing long-standing concerns over the compensation framework within the legal profession. The order seeks to ensure that lawyers receive fair and adequate compensation for their services, thereby improving Nigeria’s overall quality and sustainability of legal practice.

The NBA President has set up Remuneration Committees to implement this Order effectively in all NBA branches. These committees will be responsible for monitoring and enforcing the provisions of the Remuneration Order, ensuring compliance, and addressing any issues related to the compensation of legal practitioners.

In addition to establishing these committees, the NBA will conduct workshops aimed at sensitizing committee members and other NBA members to the duties and operations of the Remuneration Committees. These workshops will provide detailed guidance on implementing the Remuneration Order and the committees’ roles in ensuring its success.

Mr. Maikyau emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that establishing the Remuneration Committees is a crucial step towards achieving a more equitable and professional legal practice environment in Nigeria. He expressed confidence that the committees will play a vital role in upholding the standards set by the Remuneration Order and ensuring that legal practitioners are fairly compensated for their work.

The Notice by the NBA President containing the list of members of the Remuneration Committees has been attached for all members’ reference. This move marks a significant milestone in the NBA’s ongoing efforts to enhance the welfare and professional standards of legal practitioners in Nigeria.

Establishing these committees is expected to bring about a positive change in the legal profession, ensuring that lawyers nationwide receive the remuneration they deserve. This initiative reaffirms the NBA’s commitment to promoting the rule of law and improving the quality of legal practice in Nigeria.
