A demonstration organized by the Jewish Voice for Peace group at the United States Congress in Washington, DC, led to the arrest of approximately 500 protesters. The gathering aimed to draw attention to “Israel’s ongoing oppression of Palestinians,” involving participants wearing shirts with the slogan “Not in our name.”

Israel and Hamas Deny Reports of Temporary Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Conflict in Gaza

The demonstrators staged a sit-in, unfolding a prominent banner calling for a ceasefire amid the increasing death toll from Israel’s recent airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.

According to Jewish Voice for Peace, around 10,000 individuals also took to the streets of the US capital to join the cause. The group issued a statement indicating their intent to bring widespread awareness to what they perceive as the US’s complicity in the ongoing Palestinian oppression by shutting down Congress.

In response, US authorities moved to clear the building of protesters and started processing the arrests. The Israeli government’s severe restrictions on Gaza, including the blockade on essential supplies such as food, water, electricity, and medical aid, have fueled the fire.

Details of the Anti-Israel Protest at the US Congress

This action was taken after Hamas, the governing authority in Gaza, initiated an attack on southern Israel on October 7, resulting in a sharp escalation of tensions and casualties.

Israeli authorities reported a death toll of at least 1,400, predominantly civilians, along with the capture of 199 individuals. The subsequent Israeli airstrikes have devastated numerous neighbourhoods, damaging infrastructure. Palestinian authorities stated that more than 3,400 individuals, including many children, died during the bombardment.

The Israeli government’s actions in Gaza have faced widespread criticism for their perceived role in collective punishment, sparking considerable outrage in the Middle East and globally.
