FEC Meeting Delayed: Tinubu Yet to Convene 44 Days After Cabinet Inauguration

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has not convened a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting 44 days after the inaugural cabinet session on August 28. The FEC, chaired by the President, plays a pivotal role in shaping the policies and programs of the Federal Government and serves as an advisory body to the President.

Following the inauguration of 45 ministers on August 28, the President, who has been away for a significant portion of September, has not presided over another FEC meeting. During his absence, Vice President Kashim Shettima, who could have chaired the meetings, was also on official duty representing the President.

The delay in convening the FEC meeting is attributed to an impending ministerial retreat that is yet to take place. A top presidency source explained that each minister has been provided with documents specifying their mandates and targets. The retreat will allow ministers to internalize these documents before convening the FEC meeting.

Additionally, the three ministers recently confirmed by the Senate are awaiting their swearing-in, which is expected to occur during the next cabinet meeting. Despite the delay in holding the FEC meeting, the President has continued to receive briefings from ministers and heads of various agencies and parastatals.

The reason behind the delay, as explained by the official, is the need for ministers to thoroughly prepare and understand their mandates and targets before the ministerial retreat. Once this process is completed, the President will likely preside over the next FEC meeting to set the government’s agenda.
