A middle-aged man, identified as Umar Faruk, has allegedly committed suicide over his inability to pay the accumulated debt of N1.7m in floating his point-of-sale POS business in Adamawa.

Faruk, who appeared in court with a bottle of rat poison in his pocket, took it and slumped instantly before the judge on court premises.

Faruk, a resident of Yola South LGA, was sued by his friend, Mustapha Baraya, over the said money after frantic efforts to recover the money proved abortive.

Baraya was said to loan the deceased over N1.9m to operate the POS business. However, they misappropriated the fund and refunded the sum of N150,000 only on an instalment basis.

Baraya’s efforts to recover the remaining N1.7m balance were unsuccessful as Umar, and his father kept deceiving him even after the court delivered the judgment.

The court has earlier ruled that the deceased refunded the money within one month but to no avail.

The defendant and his father informed the court that they had a rice farm ready for harvest and that after the harvest, they would refund the money.

The defendant and his father secretly went and harvested the crop without the knowledge of the court and refused to refund the money.

The court then enforced its judgement, ordering Umar’s house, given to him by his father, to be disposed of.

The house was sold for N1.1 million to raise the money to refund it in compliance with the order.

After taking the poison, the deceased instantly slumped down and was rushed to Special Hospital Yola for medical attention, where he was pronounced dead.
